I recently scored a freebie in my latest yarn haul: a gorgeous, chunky chenille in mint green. It’s actually a type of yarn I’ve never worked with before, so I was excited to see what it could do!

Naturally, the first thing I did was fall down a research rabbit hole. Most of the projects I found for this yarn were amigurumi projects, which isn’t usually my thing.

I wanted something “cute and fab” to wear, so I set my heart on a rounded beanie with ruffles.

Finding a pattern was a bit of a struggle, though.

I prefer written pattern, and almost everything I found was in video format so I decided to make one instead!

I was determined to make it work, but then I hit a snag: I don’t have enough yarn.

I realized my freebie stash wouldn’t be enough to handle those ruffles (they are total yarn-eaters!). I quickly ordered a 150g ball of chunky mint chenille to match, but when it arrived… it was a different shade. 😭

But hey, you know me, I love a good plot twist!

Since the shades didn’t match, I decided to lean into the contrast and make a two-toned hat. I used the darker shade as an accent, alternating three rounds of the main color with a round of the darker accent color.

Honestly? This was a huge “trust the process” moment. While I was making it, I kept looking at it sideways, wondering if the ruffles were even forming properly. But once the ruffles were done, it turned out so cute! It actually reminds me of a little octopus plushie.

Because I don’t want anyone else to have to jump through hoops just to find a written pattern for a hat like this, I decided to write it down myself!

And it’s very simple as well!

If you can do a magic ring and single crochet, you are set!

Without further ado, here it is!
