Soooo… I just built an octopus army.

Just kidding.

I wanted to make something that I can hand out as gifts this year-end, and I thought a keychain would be a great idea.

I know it’s early, but I figured if I wanted to make handmade gifts, I’d get a head start on that. Trust me, I’m not trying to rush the holiday season, but future-me will be super grateful when I’m not frantically crocheting in December!

I wanted to make mini versions of the viral reversible octopus that has happy on one side and sad or angry on the other. They’re basically the perfect way to silently communicate your mood without having to say a word. Who hasn’t needed one of those on a Monday morning, right?

I was able to find this free pattern, and it was a total lifesaver:

Reversible Octopus 2 in by Katia Glebov.

I made it almost the same as this pattern except for the following things:

  • I used soft polyester yarn, and I also tried it using mercerized yarn. The pink sides are all polyester, and the blue sides are mercerized.
  • I didn’t put stuffing on the tentacles, mainly because I didn’t have any on hand right now. It still turned out okay, as you can see, and the stuffing might have made it heavier as well.
  • I added a chain and attached a hook there so it can easily be a keychain.

These turned out cute, and I’m so excited to hand these out along with the other gifts I’m making. I’m already picturing these little guys dangling off backpacks and car keys! It’s such a great feeling to know I made something personal that people can actually use every day.

If you’ve got some free time and a hook, you should definitely give this pattern a shot!

What do you think? Do you have any gift ideas for me?

Let me know!

Lots of love
